Finding high quality products that are both effective and safe can be tricky. Most people want to use a ‘natural’ or ‘organic’ product, but don’t really know what that means. Companies are experts at marketing to these unknowing people, and there are lots of loopholes and words that can be misleading. At Melt, we’re not into tricking people. We decided to write this post to clarify exactly what you’re buying, and make sure you get only the best.
When you’re looking at buying cosmetics and skincare, you’re most likely being bombarded with words like: natural, organic, paraben free, sulphate free, etc. It’s hard to know exactly what to go for. Most people associate organic quality with USDA. While USDA standards are great in the American food industry, you really want to look for EcoCert on cosmetic and skincare products. EcoCert is an organic certification organization, founded in France in 1991. It conducts inspections in over 80 countries, and is one of the worlds largest organic certification organizations. Good news for you: all the Nelly DeVuyst products at Melt are EcoCert certified! That means that all the ingredients are derived rom renewable resources, and manufactured by environmentally friendly processes. This standard, guarantees there are no GMO’s, parabens, artificial perfumes, silicon, or animal derived ingredients aside from milk or honey. There’s also a lot of other nasty, big name chemicals left out. Being certified as an EcoCert organic product also means that there’s at least 95% plant based ingredients in the formula. A ‘natural’ product is only required to have 50% plant based ingredients, scary! In addition, all companies manufacturing EcoCert products are subject to onsite audits to be sure these standards are being met.
COSMOS is the next step up from EcoCert. COSMOS (meaning cosmetic organic standard), was formed by EcoCert in France, along with organic standardization groups in Germany, Italy, and Great Britain, and is currently based out of Belgium (NDV’s original birthplace!). Cosmos was started to safeguard to cosmetic industry, the environment, and the people using the products. They are pushing for an even more natural and organic standard. COSMOS is subject to even more rigid ingredient standards and more frequent manufacturer audits. Along with the products themselves being organic, even the packaging is different. Of course, it is all recyclable, but even the labels and ink are vegetable based and biodegradable. Everything from the soil the ingredients are grown in, the process of active ingredient extraction, and the bottle sitting on your counter, are all top-of-the-line quality.
